Icon Design – Expressive symbolism

The art of communication through icon design

In our visually shaped world, icon design plays a crucial role in digital communication. A well-designed icon conveys a clear message at first glance and serves as a universal language that overcomes cultural and linguistic barriers. It is about reducing complexity and capturing the essence of a concept, action, or product in a simple way.

Less is more

The challenge in icon design lies in the art of subtraction. A designer must decide which features of an object or concept are essential to reduce it to its simplest form without losing its meaning. This requires mastering a balancing act between precision and abstraction.

Intuition as a guiding principle

The goal of an icon is intuitive recognizability. Users should not have to puzzle over what an icon represents. Once assigned to a theme, the icon should be quicker to grasp than the interpretation of text. Colors, shapes, and contours are chosen to be immediately understandable. The best icons are those that require no additional explanations and are seamlessly integrated into the user experience.

Modern icons are drawn with vectorized shapes. This means that no pixel gradients are used to create shapes; instead, they are based on harmonized, human-friendly figures. These vector data can be displayed in infinite sizes, as they are mathematically recalculated and not interpolated.
