The first mobile devices with expansion slots for additional memory hit the market more than ten years ago, but these early models were exceptions rather than the rule. The Nokia 9110 was the first mobile phone with a slot for memory expansion, and in 2002 we saw the first device that supported Memory Stick – the Sony Ericsson P800.

In the following years, the microSD card became the preferred choice for manufacturers of mobile devices, with its acceptance exceeding two-thirds of all devices with card slots by 2007. Since then, microSD cards have become standard in mobile phones, and there are hardly any devices that support a different memory standard or lack a slot altogether.

The entire market for SD cards was estimated at $8,973.8 million in the year 2021, with an expected annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.9% over the forecast period from 2021 to 2028.
It is generally known that the vast majority of today’s mobile devices have SD card slots, with some notable exceptions like Apple, which has chosen not to include SD card slots in their devices.
